The Desperado trilogy is great.
El Mariachi
Desperado
Once upon a time in Mexico

This trilogy doesn't get enough love. Once upon a time in Mexico is a lot better than what many give it credit for. Come on, where else can you get a line like "Are you a Mexi-can or a Mexi-Can't?"

Only Robert Rodriguez would ever come up with a such a line and only could Danny Trejo deliver such a line.

Except Johnny Depp delivers the line.

I love that movie.
But I've confused it with "The Mexican" before. Kept waiting for Gandolfini and Pitt to show up.

The thing with that trilogy is that Desperado is just SO much better than the other two, and it can stand on its own as an entirely self-contained movie, that I never really care to watch the other two.
IMO, Mariachi is just kind of hard to watch. I can enjoy some low budget films, but Mariachi kind of becomes a chore to get through.
Mexico, on the other hand, is just convoluted, and feels rather shoehorned in. It's an entertaining film, but it really comes across as a bit of a forced endeavor to me.
And in the middle, Desperado is just so fucking perfect. If I were to consider this to be one of the greatest trilogies, it'd be dishonest, because it would ALL just be on the back of how good Desperado is.
To me, it's like considering Terminator to be one of the great film franchises, just because T2 is the single greatest piece of art humans have ever made.

Agreed. Desperado is absolutely amazing, and already gives you pretty much everything you need. Steve Buscemi's whole speech/story in the first scene is so completely, absolutely amazing that it could be a movie all on its own, and I just never get tired of it. Salma Hayek in one of her first major US roles looking, well, looking like a young Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas kicking ass and taking names (and providing just as much eye candy as Hayek), Danny Trejo as a knife-crazy assassin... There is no part of that movie that I don't love.

Wait there is a prequel to Desperado?

Not really. Not sure why people consider it a trilogy because the first film El Mariachi is basically a cheap, low budget version of Desparado. Once Rodriguez had enough kudos and money to make another film he remade it with a bigger budget.

100% agree. This feels like an underappreciated trilogy

Ay ya ya ya, ah ya mi amor
Ah mi morena [something] corazon
I can still hear the whole song in my head. Hell, I can see the entire scene in my mind's eye.

This. I love Robert Rodriguez, but mainly his action stuff. Turning Danny Trejo into a cult legend was a fantastic feat. I laughed a lot at Machete, what an entertaining ride! Also, El Mariachi and Desperado are so, so good. Had less fun with OUATIM. And I have been completely confused by Sharkboy and Lava Girl and Alita: Battle Angel .

This trilogy is where I went from "movies are entertainment" to "movies are art to be appreciated as such."

The Mexico trilogy is the one that came to my mind too

Fuck. Yes. Those movies are, hands down, Robert Rodriguez's best work. I don't care what anyone has to say about Spy Kids.

Averages out to a good movie and a half at best, IMO.

Fans of El Mariachi should check out the original Django.
