Aggie corps members also loaded a mortar onto a train to drive to Waco and shoot at the Baylor campus. The reasoning is supposedly that a corps member had been killed at a Baylor game that season and the ags were seeking revenge. This all happened like 100 years ago tho.

Nah, as per this source Baylor stopped being all male in 1886, well before the incident.

I thought this was wrong because one of the larger reasons that brawl broke out at halftime is cuz the Aggie cadets had a reputation for wooing the Baylor girls - much to the Baylor guys dismay.

The corps stealing a train and artillery and being stopped by Texas Rangers is an old story, but obviously a fake story. No train went from College Station to Waco at the time. The reason behind the story is quite true though.

TLDR Summary- Baylor’s cheerleaders were on the field at halftime, aggies thought they were being made fun of so ran at the women on the field, fans from both sides stands emptied and a riot took place. A&M student died as a result.

Below is a story I posted earlier this year from a A&M historian with added emphasis on major plot points.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - A&M University Archivist David Chapman said the fight back in 1926 started while Baylor students were performing a halftime show that involved driving a car with female students onto the field."The show was interrupted by a cadet (from A&M) who assumed the auto was being used in a derogatory demonstration against A&M -- as a bucking Ford did the previous year," Chapman said. The student ran up to the car and began rocking it, Chapman said. Baylor fans pulled him away, A&M fans rushed to protect him and a riot ensued.

Chapman said newspaper accounts of the melee said that the fight eventually broke up when the Aggie Band began playing the national anthem. One Aggie student, Charles M. Sessums, received serious head injuries and eventually died. The fight caused deep tension between the two schools.Chapman said A&M fans accused the Baylor students of bringing trunks filled with clubs to the game in preparation for the fight. Baylor fans denied it, and Chapman said there's no definitive evidence to settle the debate. The Eagle's account of the game doesn't describe the fight in detail. It apparently hadn't begun before the paper's deadline for the next edition, which described the game as tied at halftime. The Nov. 1 edition of The Eagle ran a short quote from A&M President T.O. Walton."No statement will be given out concerning the unfortunate and tragic death of Charles M. Sessums until all the facts are learned," he said. "All sorts of wild rumors have reached the ears of officials of A&M since the unfortunate affair at Waco had a tragic ending.

These reports are for the most part so erroneous as to be absurd."The Nov. 2 paper described a funeral on the steps of A&M's YMCA Building attended by 2,000 students. The Aggie Band performed "Nearer My Lord to Thee," the paper said. According to urban legend, a group of Aggie students returned to College Station after the fight, picked up a cannon and put it on a train headed for Waco with plans to demolish the campus. They were stopped by the Texas Rangers, according to the myth. But Chapman said he has doubts about that story."There is no evidence that that actually happened," he said.He said he's been unable to find any documents or press clippings from the time that confirm that story. Plus, he said, there wasn't a train route from Waco to College Station at that time."But that's the thing -- there is no way to prove that it's not true," Chapman said. The schools didn't play again for five years. A&M won the first rematch 33-7 in College Station. The Aggies lead the overall series. source

Yeah, it really is interesting. I think there can be an argument for assault in that case (literally a helmet was used as a weapon), Vick stomping, Maroon (NHL - a lot), etc. but we don't see it. I can only assume that it's because proper enforcement happens via penalties and ejections and there is likely some contract signed regarding liability.

Once that whistle blows, and especially once you leave the field, there should be full enforcement of the law. I am glad we are seeing this with the MSU players.

Media Advisory Re: October 29 Michigan Stadium

Tunnel Incident

Ann Arbor, MI - Following the altercation between members of the Michigan and Michigan State football teams on October 29, the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security (UMDPSS) conducted a thorough investigation into potential criminal liability. UMDPSS was assisted in its investigation by the Michigan State University Police Department and the Michigan State Police. We are grateful to our law-enforcement partners for their exhaustive investigation.

At the conclusion of that investigation, UMDPSS submitted to the Prosecutor's Office a request for criminal charges against several individuals all student-athletes on the Michigan State football team. After reviewing the evidence and the law, the Prosecutor's Office has authorized the following charges against the following individuals:

Khary Crump: One count of felonious assault, in violation of MCL 750.82, a felony

Itayvion Brown: One count of aggravated assault, in violation of MCL 750.81a, a misdemeanor

Angelo Grose: One count of aggravated assault, in violation of MCL 750.81a, a misdemeanor

Justin White: One count of aggravated assault, in violation of MCL 750.81a, a misdemeanor

Brandon Wright: One count of aggravated assault, violation of MCL 750.81a, a misdemeanor

Zion Young: One count of aggravated assault, in violation of MCL 750.81a, a misdemeanor

Jacoby Windmon: One count of assault & battery, in violation of MCL 750.81, a misdemeanor

All charges are merely allegations. Those charged are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

We understand and appreciate the widespread interest in this matter. Consistent with the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct, however, we cannot and do not engage in pretrial publicity around pending cases. See Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct 3.6.

For those interested, here is how Michigan law defines the charges:

Felonious Assault: “Except as provided in subsection (2), a person who assaults another person with a gun, revolver, pistol, knife, iron bar, club, brass knuckles, or other dangerous weapon without intending to commit murder or to inflict great bodily harm less than murder is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 4 years or a fine of not more than $2,000.00, or both.”

Assault & Battery: “Except as otherwise provided in this section, a person who assaults or assaults and batters an individual, if no other punishment is prescribed by law, is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 93 days or a fine of not more than $500.00, or both.” (Michigan likely uses the common law definition of “assault and battery,” which is basically any kind of non-consensual contact creating bodily injury or otherwise harmful contact.)

Aggravated Assault: “Except as otherwise provided in this section, a person who assaults an individual without a weapon and inflicts serious or aggravated injury upon that individual without intending to commit murder or to inflict great bodily harm less than murder is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 1 year or a fine of not more than $1,000.00, or both.”

In other words, using his helmet is what got Crump a felony.

Assuming none of them have criminal records, the 6 charged with misdemeanors should be eligible for first time offender diversion programs. No time served, community service, record expungement = no criminal record after a couple years.

Even the guy charged with a Felony is likely eligible for a diversion program. He may serve some time on weekends or pay some fines, but he's likely to get the opportunity to clean his slate at the end, as it should be imo. I don't know the character of these athletes, but their lives shouldn't be ruined by what is really just one stupid mistake.

All that said, this has been the tenor of this rivalry since Dantonio and it needs to be dialed back.

I am a Michigan lawyer. We have various levels of assault. Among the most common assaults charged are simple assault (which is a 93-day misdemeanor), aggravated assault (a 1-year misdemeanor), felonious assault (a 4- year felony), assault with intent to do great bodily harm (a 10-year felony), and assault with intent to murder (a capital felony). There are others as well, which are spelled out in the relevant section of the Michigan penal code:

Felonious assault after a quick google search appears to be up to 4 years in prison. I doubt that they will push for that strict of a punishment or that a judge would go along with it but that's pretty serious business.

I don't know any of these kids backgrounds. I only know my own experience. I used to teach at a high poverty school for years. Most of my students grew up poor, many with no father, and a mother working 2-3 jobs. The seemingly overreactions I saw there....

They've done brain studies on people in these environments and it shows a lot of their thinking process gets stuck in the amygdala, causing them to almost always react to any kind of negativity with a fight or flight reflex.

No healthily raised kid would do what these kids did in the video, but plenty of kids that grew up conditioned by the hardships of poverty would. To these kinds of brains, simply insulting them could trigger a reaction that would manifest in physical violence.

I'm 1000% sure there will be a tell all book about all the stuff that's been shoved under the rug at Bama.

Not because Saban is worse than anywhere else, but because every college football program covers shit up in order to win. Hell, even high schools cover stuff up so they can say their players went on to D1 programs (my high school covered up at least one rape and violent bullying of an LGBT student for its football players - and that's just that I know of). I'm really pleased MSU didn't try to cover this up, not that they could've.
