I have watched this as a Kenyan, and my heart is ripped apart. I must start to do something about it. It is heartbreaking.

In ECOWAS countries it's the same cheap glue that people use to patch bicycle tires. But I've also seen village shopkeepers sell straight up ether. Most people simply don't realize how harmful this stuff can be.

You can buy ether over the counter in Belgium.

You can as well in most places in the form of starting fluid for vehicles.

We used either in shop class in high school for exactly this purpose. Nothing gets an old engine to crank over like a little shot of ether

In Australia we have this stuff called "Start Ya Bastard!" and it's pretty much that but in an aerosol can. You give it a quick squirt directly into the carby, turn the key and fucken boom, either the engine starts or you fucken set fire to the hood and engine bay. Great stuff! Every Australian house comes with a can of it sitting next to the WD-40 in the garage haha
And that IS really what it is called.

Minus the brand name that's the same stuff we had. Came in a short yellow aerosol can.

I donated to the charity that's helping out.
A lot of countries have problems with drugs, but these kids are just too young to be so hopeless.

I'm a terrible person but when he asked the guy passed out in the pile of trash ''how do you feel?'' I lost my shit laughing. Like I live in a garbage mountain sniffing glue how the fuck do you think I feel? It reminded me of that Dave Chapelle joke ''Bitch I live in a trash can!'

This is in Mlango Kubwa. I know some of these people and they are beautiful souls. Mlango is a very difficult place to live but the people are incredible

The documentary misses out on looking into the reason why people do this and also what effect it has on their lives and communities. All we see is the direct acquisition and use of the drug. Only once does it talk about the actual life that is stressful for a person and which causes them to do this. Some more macro information would've made this much more effective. It kinda just comes of as exploitative as-is.

Ya I couldn’t finish it, seems like more of a exploitive piece than actually diving deeper into the reasons why the country is in its current state

I first read about 'zombie slave' workers and indentured servants probably a quarter century or more ago. Chilling.

How are all these guys allowing someone to interview them? And white guy at that?

I'm guessing their guide is connected with the Amani charity. If a charity is providing food and rescuing kids from these barrios, their workers would be well-known and treated with respect.

Typical rich white guy so obviously looking down on those people like he's morally superior and not even realizing it.
Why did he spill out that kids jet fuel? What did he expect after "going after" the shoemaker? The kind of questions he was asking about morality to kerosine dealer. And what was that disgusted face after Steve offered him some of his dope? What the fuck?!
In his mind he's propably a good guy, averting those stupid kids from the obvious evil that are all illegal drugs, but in truth unable to truly listen to what they are saying. I wonder how this interview would have looked if done by Andrew Callahan.

Are… You… Sniffing… Too? Do you think the Channel 5 crew would all join the party and have a good time there? Misery on this kind of industrial scale is overwhelming for the people that live it; let alone people who only visit. Source: A “visit” to Mogadishu.

Africa needs it's reset button pushed. Start it all over. It can be the first of many. Every time someone starts to improve something there, they ruin it for themselves.
White farmers come in, improve food quality and availability a great deal. "Evil white man!" Chase out all the white farmers. Quality of life tanks and they scream "Come back white farmers, we needed you after all!" White farmers come back and are still treated like trash. They have to turn their homes into fortresses just to survive.
When a nation wants so desperately to end, you need to step back and let it die.

If you want to convert people, you need to hide your obvious racism more effectively. You see, this one was too easy to figure out and ignore.

I'm not racist. It has nothing to do with their color. The majority of that continent is self-imploding on a daily basis. The only reason it hasn't completely collapsed is because of constant handouts from the US and UK. There is no self-sustainability, lawlessness and corruption run rampant, and all those poor fools know how to do is be violent and have kids.
Even mother nature keeps trying to hit the reset button. Constant outbreaks of malaria, aids, fevers, and so on. But let's keep sending rice so those people can continue to live their miserable existences and grow into miserable, bitter, violent adults, and continue the cycle.

But since I am supposedly white, according to all the replies, the "I'm not racist" comment will confirm, in your tiny minds, what you are already thinking...and I don't really care.
