Hey now, America doesn’t need bombs to decimate her cities!

Well FGSG got rave reviews too (haven’t read it, I’m not saying it’s good lol), and it’s marketed primarily as an adult novel. But that’s part of the issue in publishing is that now that huge YA demographic are older and not as interested in high school drama. But publishers still gotta make money.
As a librarian, it’s getting harder to make purchases because our budgets aren’t increasing, but there’s more and more coming out each year. It feels like a shot in the dark sometimes with what we decide to purchase vs. what we decide to pass on.

Yeah, it’s pretty decent, especially considering their outside appearance haha

The Ember in the Ashes fits this pretty well I think!

This is a fun topic of discussion because the answer is: there isn’t really one. Why? The publishing industry has totally over saturated itself after the Harry Potter/Hunger Games/ Twilight trend of the early 00s. Everything is getting published and there is so much money to be made in YA, some really great series are being overshadowed by the sheer magnitude of stuff being released.
From what I’ve seen in the library, the Scythe series by Shusterman is quite popular, but skews older than HP/PJ

Oh, she will deny that until she’s dead in the ground! “Didn’t happen in the books so it didn’t happen!”

I appreciate the sources since I’m not familiar with the story. To me, it just seems clear this person shouldn’t be in any general prison population, regardless of gender. Honestly they seem like they belong in a psych ward, not a prison.
Still, this is not a cut and dry issue; trans women who are housed with men face incredibly high rates of sexual assault and are still being denied proper housing. If JK really supported all women as she claims, she should also be fighting to have these women removed from male prisons.

It’s not bad by any means that the main characters are white. The issue with Anthony Goldstein is that his entire inclusion in the story is to be Jewish. He has no character, nothing to do with the story, etc. She could have named him Joe Smith and has no impact. But with “Anthony Goldstein” JK can just point to the name and be like “see, there are Jewish people!” And she did that—when a Jewish fan asked if there were Jewish students at Hogwarts, she didn’t say all religions are there, or the Jewish population is representative of the UKs Jewish population. All she said was “Anthony Goldstein, ravenclaw, Jewish wizard”. It’s pretty much a prime example of tokenism.
I’m not saying Book 3 needed a chapter about Harry going to a bar mitzvah. I don’t even care about how Anthony was used in the story, and I think it’d be fine without changing it. But her attitude about it rankles me, because she clearly just chose the name Anthony Goldstein to tic off a diversity checkbox and move on. It’s lazy.

I know. I’m very curious to see what the actual sales are like. It might just be an outspoken minority of people online that doesn’t translate to actual sales.
Let’s see if we get a few more of these tweets ahead of release

Yeah, sometimes it feels like shouting at a wall but if a few people get it it’s worth the loss of Reddit karma lol

It’s hard for me to grasp because I was a massive Harry Potter fan my whole life, and I even consider myself one still because I just can’t remove that part of my childhood.
But it’s just so easy not to buy things. Are people really fans of Harry potter or fans of Harry potter things?

Brilliant, I wish I’d thought of that!
Our drastic measures involved duct taping cardboard over the west-facing nursery window. I didn’t care if we looked like a crack den so long as he slept

I would generally say better safe than sorry. I’d rather change a swim diaper on the beach than handle him pooping without one
